Australia has dozens of caravan manufacturers, from massive operations producing thousands of vans a year to small custom builders making a handful. Quality, reputation, price, and after-sales support vary enormously. A brand that builds a reliable, well-designed van with a strong dealer network saves you money and frustration over 12 months of hard travel. A brand with poor build quality or no service presence outside metro areas costs you in repairs, downtime, and stress. This guide covers the brands most commonly recommended by Big Lappers, grouped by price bracket.
What Makes A Good Big Lap Brand
Build quality. The van needs to survive 20,000 to 40,000km of Australian roads, including corrugations, potholes, and the occasional rough track. Chassis integrity, wall and roof construction, cabinet mounting, and plumbing/electrical quality all matter. A cheap van that falls apart 6 months in costs more in repairs than the premium brand would have upfront.
Dealer and service network. Things break. Water leaks, fridge issues, electrical faults, suspension damage. If the brand has dealers or authorised service centres across Australia, you can get repairs done on the road. If the brand is sold from one dealership in Melbourne with no service network, you’re on your own from Broome to Cairns.
Warranty. Look at what’s actually covered, not just the length. Structural warranty (3 to 5 years typical), appliance warranty (varies by component), and what the warranty process involves if you’re 2,000km from the selling dealer.
Resale value. Some brands hold value significantly better than others. If you plan to sell the van after the trip, buying a brand with strong resale saves thousands on the total cost of ownership.
Budget Brands ($30,000 to $65,000 New)
Jayco
The biggest caravan manufacturer in Australia. The Journey and Silverline ranges are the workhorses: reliable, well-supported, and widely available. Build quality is consistent if not exceptional. The real advantage is the service network: Jayco has more dealers and authorised repairers across Australia than any other brand. Something breaks on the Nullarbor? Jayco has you covered. Resale value is strong.
Windsor / Coromal
Established brands offering competitive pricing. Build quality varies by model and era; newer production is generally improved. Decent entry-level options for budget-conscious Big Lappers, but service networks are thinner than Jayco’s.
Jurgens
South African-designed brand built in Australia. Known for solid construction, particularly the chassis and suspension. Good value for money with better-than-average standard inclusions. Growing service network.
Mid-Range Brands ($65,000 to $110,000 New)
New Age
Excellent value with generous standard inclusions. The Gecko and Manta ranges are popular among Big Lappers for their practical layouts and competitive pricing. Build quality has improved significantly in recent years. Semi off-road options are well-specced for the price.
Crusader
Builds robust vans focused on touring capability. Better suspension and chassis components than many competitors, which matters on corrugated roads. Good layouts for long-term travel. Solid mid-range reputation.
Avida
Consistently well-built with attention to detail. The Emerald and Sapphire ranges are popular for couples and families. Higher quality materials and fit than budget brands, which shows over 12 months of daily use. Good standard inclusions.
Kokoda
Focused on semi off-road and off-road caravans. Strong chassis, good suspension, and built for Australian conditions. Popular among Big Lappers planning rougher routes. Competitive pricing for the off-road capability provided.
Premium Brands ($110,000+ New)
Retreat
Melbourne-built with excellent quality control. Premium materials, thoughtful layouts, and a reputation for customer service. Holds value well. Higher price justified by build quality that shows after years of use.
Lotus
Specialises in off-road caravans built to very high standards. Composite construction, purpose-built for remote Australia. Expensive but built to survive the harshest conditions. Strong following among serious off-road tourers.
Zone RV
Full composite construction (no timber frame), which eliminates the water damage risk that plagues many conventional caravans. Lightweight for their size. Premium pricing but innovative construction.
Network RV
Build premium off-road and semi off-road caravans with high-quality components throughout. Known for excellent standard specifications and solid build quality. Competitive at the premium level.
Join Big Lap and caravan Facebook groups before buying. Ask owners of specific brands about their experience after 6+ months on the road. Showroom impressions are very different from long-term ownership reality. The brands with the most satisfied long-term owners are the ones worth buying.

Brand reputation matters more on a 12-month trip than a weekend trip. Something will break; how it gets fixed determines your experience.
- Jayco is the default recommendation for budget-conscious Big Lappers: reliable, widely serviced, strong resale.
- New Age, Crusader, and Avida offer the best value in the mid-range with better build quality than budget brands.
- Retreat, Lotus, and Zone RV deliver premium quality that justifies the price for long-term travel.
- Service network matters as much as build quality. A great van with no service availability becomes a problem on the road.
- Ask long-term owners, not showroom salespeople. Facebook groups are the best source of real-world brand feedback.
