You’re going to spend roughly a third of your Big Lap in bed. That’s thousands of nights on a caravan mattress that’s almost certainly thinner, firmer, and less comfortable than what you’re used to at home. The good news: a few targeted upgrades can transform a mediocre caravan bed into something you genuinely look forward to climbing into after a long day on the road.
Most caravan mattresses are basic foam, designed to keep costs down and weight low rather than to give you a good night’s sleep. They’re also often non-standard sizes (shorter, narrower, or oddly shaped to fit the van’s layout), which means your home bedding won’t fit properly. This guide covers the two upgrades that make the biggest difference: a quality mattress topper and properly fitted sheets.
Mattress Toppers
A mattress topper is the single most impactful comfort upgrade you can make to your caravan bedroom. A quality topper adds a layer of cushioning and support that compensates for the thin, firm mattress underneath. The difference is immediate and dramatic: better sleep, less back pain, and a bed that feels closer to what you have at home.
The key consideration for caravans is that many beds are non-standard sizes or have cut corners (literally: island beds, corner beds, and beds with radiused edges). Off-the-shelf toppers from Kmart won’t fit. You’ll likely need a custom-cut option or one specifically designed for caravan mattress dimensions.
Sheets & Bedding
Standard home sheets rarely fit caravan beds properly. The mattresses are thinner (typically 10 to 15cm versus 25 to 30cm for a home mattress), the dimensions are often non-standard, and corners may be cut or curved. Sheets that don’t fit bunch up, pull off, and make an already small bed feel worse.
Caravan-specific sheets are designed for thinner mattresses and non-standard dimensions. They stay put, fit snugly, and are available in materials suited to the temperature extremes you’ll encounter on the road.
Other Bedroom Essentials
Pillows: Bring your own from home. Pillows are personal and a familiar pillow makes a caravan bed feel much more like your own. If space is tight, a compressible travel pillow (Sea to Summit Aeros, $50β$80) packs down small but isn’t as comfortable as a real pillow for nightly use.
Doona / sleeping bag: A quality doona or sleeping bag rated for the temperatures you’ll encounter is essential. For couples, a double sleeping bag or a good doona with a duvet cover works. In winter in southern states, you’ll want something rated to at least 0Β°C. In the Top End in summer, a light cotton sheet is all you need. Many travellers carry both.
Reading lights: Clip-on USB rechargeable reading lights ($10β$20) let one person read without waking the other. Far better than the van’s overhead light. Look for warm-tone LED options.
Phone/device holders: A small shelf, caddy, or adhesive phone holder beside the bed keeps your phone, book, glasses, and water bottle within reach without cluttering the mattress.
- A mattress topper is the single best comfort upgrade for your caravan bedroom. Budget $150β$400 for a quality one.
- Caravan-specific fitted sheets are essential. Standard home sheets won’t fit thinner caravan mattresses properly.
- Bring your own pillows from home. Familiar pillows make a bigger difference than you’d expect.
- Carry warm bedding for cold nights and a light option for hot ones. You’ll use both over the course of the Lap.
