Who knew you could be so in touch with nature in the middle of the most bustling, innovative cities in the world? The Royal Botanic Garden gives you the chance to explore global plantings and a range of Australian flora, with over 94 acres of lush greenery.

Enjoy picnics across its clean lawns and watch as black swans laze around the ponds. Be sure to book the Aboriginal Heritage Walk, where you’ll come across Indigenous rain forest, mini ecosystems and Victorian-era landscaping that is considered the best in the world.

In summer the gardens are filled with exciting theatre performances. Take the kids out for a fun day at the Ian Potter Foundation Children’s Garden, that invites kids to explore, discover, and imagine.

See the visitor centre for the departure of tours, some of which are free, and all of which should be booked on their website. For many visitors who just keep asking for more, the Royal Botanic Gardens have also developed the Australian Garden in Cranbourne.

6. Queen Victoria Market

‘Vic Market’ is the largest open-air market in the southern hemisphere, with over 600 traders. Be sure to visit in the early morning to shop for only the best, fresh produce, and accept tasters of delicious tidbits.
The deli hall is a must-see, lined with everything from soft cheeses and Polish sausages to Greek dips and kangaroo biltong.
On Sundays, clothing and knick-knack stalls dominate; they’re big on variety, but they aren’t exactly going to be on the runway of New York Fashion Week. However, if you’re in the market for sheepskin moccasins or cheap T-shirts, you’ll be in luck.
